Photographer Charles Moriarty announces his new publication «BROCK» featuring Brock Yurich.
‘Brock‘ is a 144 page fine art coffee table book printed on exquisite 250gsm paper. It comprises a body of work shot with actor and bodybuilder Brock Yurich over a four year period across a wide range of geographies including New York, London, Ohio and California. There will also be an interview with Brock, and an introduction.
I first connected with Brock over Instagram and for years we conversed about working together. Finally in 2021 after Covid died down we collaborated on two occasions in New York over one week, both in the studio and on location in an apartment on the upper east side of Manhattan. The images are what you would expect from a first meeting of individuals, broad in their engagement while two people are figuring one another out.
For ‘Brock’ there’s a considerable body of work already created, but with the help of a Kickstarter I hope to fund the final shoots in Ohio and Los Angeles this spring. Once completed book design and printing will commence. I endeavour to have this book on your coffee tables in September.
These additional shoots will be really important to flesh out who Brock Yurich is and give me the time needed to conceptually deliver that through powerful thought provoking images. Mapplethorpe’s work with Lisa Lyon has been particularly inspiring, and I think the themes they were working with are still of interest today. I just get to take them further into a space that is not just from the gay perspective of the photographer but also that of his subject. Understanding the interplay of gender and queer identity in the bodybuilding arena whilst also celebrating and commenting on that unique sphere. Certainly Brock presents as a traditional masculine bodybuilder, but I want to get under that surface. Who is Brock outside of that arena? Where has he come from and where does he want to go in life?
This book will be limited edition and the size of the edition will depend on the amount of books purchased through this kickstarter campaign. I’m keen to get my teeth into the design element of the book and try out some new ideas. I will also be polishing every image to perfection.
